The return of anxie-ski

And suddenly we are in a James Bond movie, or a Graham Greene novel, or even in The Americans, that series about the KGB sleeper agents living next door to YOU. Because we have anxie-ski. Fear of Russia. Worry about Putin. Panic about the return of the Cold War.

Remember the Cold War? It was a state of chilly political and military tension after World War II, between powers in the Eastern Bloc (the Soviet Union and its satellite states) and powers in the Western Bloc (the United States, its NATO allies and others). It really hotted up in the 80s and then it all seemed to cool out. And now…

Well let’s start with Ukraine, Crimea and Syria.  Have the Russians interfered with the US Election? Did they meddle with the Brexit referendum as Ben Bradshaw wildly alleged in the Commons? Now we are in full blown panic-ski. Do they really have footage of Trump ordering a ‘golden shower show’ on the bed that the Obamas slept in, in the Ritz-Carlton in Moscow? I cannot believe I just wrote that sentence. How is this not a joke?

We mocked the Svetlanas (we’re sorry) with their heels on the beach and aggressive mergers, I mean marriages, and acquisitions. They went everywhere, they bought everything, and now… They own everything. Football teams, newspapers, the US President-elect. Trump tweeted : “FAKE NEWS – A TOTAL POLITICAL WITCH HUNT!” The Russian Embassy in London tweeted from the same script, claiming MI6 was engaged in a “witch hunt” against Russia. And I keep thinking of that saying: Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you…
